Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Snoring will occur at a louder form when there is a block in airway passages and the air that has been breathed in and out will vibrate the soft relaxed palate tissues to produce snoring. On the other hand, Obstructive sleep apnea, is a condition where there will be complete blockage of throat and the person will momentarily stop breathing that will make the person to wake up with bated breathing.

Whenever the person stops breathing, he/she will wake up unconsciously and after changing the position the person will start sleeping again and continue with snoring. Persons who suffer from sleep apnea will be getting up from their sleep unconsciously many times whenever their breathing is disturbed and fall back to sleep after changing positions. The person will also start snoring shortly after falling asleep again.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition and if left untreated it may lead to memory problems, cardiovascular complications, weight gain, etc., and the persons when they drive may also meet with accidents due to the drowsy feeling caused out of disturbed sleep in the night.

Does a Loud Snoring is Indicative of Sleep Apnea?

Though a person with sleep apnea may snore louder, this doesn t mean that all loud snoring should be attributed to sleep apnea syndrome. Not all snoring are related to some medical related condition, and in order to make a correct diagnosis you must first learn to identify various other signs and symptoms related to snoring.

For example, if a snorer gets up in the middle of his/he night sleep with a bated breath and falls back to sleep unconsciously then it may be an indication for presence of sleep apnea.

If you do not have a friend or a partner by your side to watch your night sleep behaviour, then you yourself can give a try to identify your symptoms of sleep apnea. Though it may not be possible for you to recognize how many times you woke up in the night, you can look for other symptoms such as the tired feeling even after your full night s sleep, drowsiness in the morning, headaches when you wake up in the morning, etc., In any case if you find one or more of these symptoms then it is better you consult a doctor for further advice and treatment.

Your doctor will initially try with few devices such as C-PAP machine to reduce your snoring and to increase the air passage. Then your doctor will subject you to other tests based on the outcome or diagnosis of earlier tests. As said earlier, loud snoring need not necessarily indicate sleep apnea but you should never fail to ignore a loud snoring, be it your own snoring or your partner s snoring.
