There are several types of respiratory patterns. These patterns are differentiated by typical parameters and values which consist of pauses, inhalation and exhalations, respiratory frequency and body oxygen test results. About 100 years back a set of parameters for normal breathing were established. Most important among such parameters is the body oxygenation level is determined by s unit. When studies say that normal oxygen level is 40s, it means that in between inhalation and exhalation the breath holding number is 40s.

Normal Breathing Pattern: This is the most common breathing pattern universally observed in regular healthy individuals.In this kind of breathing pattern the breathing is slow, regular, invisible and inaudible (nasal-diaphragmatic). The breath is taken in small inhalations, and later relaxed for exhalation. Exhalation is automatically followed by a pause. The major part of inhalation (nearly 80%-90%) is taken care by the diaphragm, which is the main muscle for breathing. The usual count of breathing cycles in healthy people is about 12 breaths per minute. Medical studies suggest that for excellent health standard a minimum of 60s is needed by the body.

Ineffective Breathing patterns: This kind of respiratory pattern is common in sick people. They breathe more air (about 2 to 2.5 times more) than the physiological norms. Because of this they have only 10-20s of body oxygen due to heavy breathing. Over breathing (higher respiratory frequency) leads to the reduction of body oxygen level. It happens because of hypocapnia and some other similar effects. About 18 to 20 breath cycles per minute is usually recorded in cases of ineffective breathing patterns.

Heavy Breathing Pattern: This pattern is seen in critically ill and very sick patients. Faster breathing leads to less oxygen levels in brain and other cells of the body. The oxygenation unit in these people is typically 5s. Clinically it is said to be a sign of approaching death.

Ideal Breathing Pattern: In Ideal breathing, 3 breaths per minute are recommended for great health and ideal body.Typically the body oxygen levels can be raised to 180s. Yoga experts state that ideal breathing benefits the body and its various systems and indeed cures diseases.

Irregular Respiratory Pattern: This is, in other words, abnormal breathing pattern.Many people cough or sniff sporadically and, as a result breathe through the mouth. Abnormal breathing also occurs in sleep which may slowly lead to sleep apnea.
